Apple gives a preview of the latest Mac version. Mountain Lion will be available this summer and is going to take over many iOS functions. Among others, iMessages and Notification Centre will be brought along and introduced in Mac OS X.
Registered developers are all set to download the entire operating system in a developer preview.
Like almost everything at Apple, the latest operating system is enveloped in secrecy. Apple’s official website hosts a ‘sneak peek’ of the new OS X, including a preview of the functions that the wild operating system will feature.
When announced, the event featuring Mac OS X Lion, the current version of Apple’s Operating System, bore the slogan ‘Back to the Mac’. After all these years in which the attention was mainly focused on the mobile operating system, Apple draws the attention back to the Mac OS. With the introduction of Lion, in October 2010, there was already a number of iOS functions that were transferred to Mac.
iMessage and Mac
Again, with the introduction of Apple Mountain Lion, a number of known iOS applications are announced and expected to make their debut on the computer. The popular SMS alternative application, iMessage, finally finds its way into the Mac, although Apple seems to have changed the name to the more neutral ‘Messages’.
With this app, iPhone and iPad users can chat with each other and messages arrive simultaneously in all devices. You might want to know that there is already a beta version.
Notification and Game Centre
iOS 5 pushed notifications to the edge. Apparently, Apple users (and Apple) must have liked that, since Notification Centre is also expected in Mountain Lion devices; with a few changes that is.
The Game Centre application already found in iOS is also to be included in the new OS X version. Mac gamers can now share their scores with friends on another Mac or mobile device.
AirPlay Mirroring
Mountain Lion will also feature screen sharing, using Apple TV. The so-called AirPlay Mirroring is already available on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. With this technique, the screen of an IOS device – and soon a Mac – may be shared on a television screen. Therefore, playing a game or making a presentation on Mac goes to the next level, as anything can be displayed on the TV.
